The Best Skincare Routine for Active People: Keeping Your Skin Healthy, Glowing, and Workout-Ready

We caught up with skin aesthetician, Karolina — Vio Med Spa in Aventura, and she served up the insights on how Men and Women should be approaching their skin care routine and some of these, as simple as they are, could be the difference between healthy and dull looking skin.

Let’s be honest: when you’re working out regularly, your skin can sometimes feel like it’s working overtime too. Sweat, increased oil production, and potential skin irritation are just a few of the challenges your skin faces during and after a good workout. But don’t worry, there’s a skincare routine out there that can help balance it all—and it’s a combination of at-home care and med spa treatments. Whether you’re hitting the gym every day or living your best active lifestyle, here’s a skincare routine to keep your skin fresh, clear, and glowing.

  • What is the best skin care routine for someone who works out a lot?

“ For those who workout frequently, here’s a pre and post workout routine to follow:

  • At Home:

    • Pre workout:

      • Cleanser

      • Light Moisturizer

      • Sunscreen: If exercising outdoors, apply a sweat-resistant, broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher).

    • Post workout:

      • Cleanse

      • Tone

      • Moisturizer

      • Sunscreen

    • Evening Routine:

      • Double Cleanse

      • Exfoliation

      • Serums: like hyaluronic acid & vitamin C

      • Moisturizer

  • Med Spa Treaments:

    1. HydraFacial: A great treatment for deep cleansing, exfoliating, and hydrating the skin. It removes dead skin cells and impurities while nourishing the skin with moisturizing serums

    2. LED Light Therapy: Ideal for reducing inflammation, killing acne-causing bacteria, and boosting collagen production. It’s a non-invasive add-on to facials or stand-alone treatment.

    3. Glo2 Facials: These are great for replenishing skin after a workout, delivering hydration, and promoting radiance.”

  • Is it ok to workout wearing makeup?

“ No. It’s generally not recommended to work out with makeup on, especially heavy or oil-based products. Makeup can mix with sweat and oil during exercise, clogging pores and leading to breakouts.”

  • How often should I be exfoliating?

“ For someone who works out regularly, exfoliating 2-3 times per week is ideal. This helps to remove sweat, oil, and dead skin cells that can accumulate due to increased activity. If you are on the drier side or sensitive, 1-2 times per week would be best.”

  • How long can I go without washing my face after a workout?

“Ideally, you should wash it right away. It's best to wash your face as soon as possible after working out, within 15 mins. The longer sweat, oil, and bacteria sit on your skin, the more likely they are to clog pores, leading to breakouts and irritation”

Your skin’s needs are a little different when you work out frequently, but with the right routine, you can keep it clear, glowing, and balanced. From cleansing and moisturizing to med spa treatments that elevate your skincare game, a combination of home care and professional treatments will keep your skin looking its best—even after your toughest workout. Remember, skincare isn’t just about looking good; it’s about feeling confident and comfortable in your own skin, whether you’re sweating it out in the gym or enjoying a rest day!
